FUE vs DHI vs Sapphire: Which Technique Is Right for You?

Turkish clinics advertise three main techniques. Here's what actually differs — incision, density control, recovery and cost — and how to pick the right one for your hair loss pattern.

FUE: the proven standard

FUE (follicular unit extraction) is the most widely used technique in the world. Individual follicular units are extracted from the donor area with a micro-punch, then implanted into small channels opened in the recipient area. It leaves tiny dot scars that are virtually invisible at normal hair length.

FUE suits most common hair loss patterns and offers the best graft-per-hour rate, which keeps costs moderate. If you need 3,000+ grafts or plan a second procedure later, classic FUE remains an excellent, predictable choice.

Sapphire FUE: the refined variant

Sapphire FUE is not a different surgery — it is FUE with channels opened by blades made of sapphire instead of steel. The smoother, sharper blades create smaller, cleaner incisions, which many surgeons believe reduces swelling, crusting and tissue trauma.

The practical differences are subtle but real: slightly faster crust healing and marginally better control of channel angle for hairline work. Most top Turkish clinics now offer Sapphire as their default; if a clinic charges a large premium for it, ask why.

DHI: maximum density control

DHI (direct hair implantation) uses a Choi implanter pen to place grafts directly, without pre-opening channels. Because incising and implanting happen in one motion, grafts spend less time outside the body, and the surgeon can pack hairlines and small areas very densely.

The trade-offs: DHI is slower and usually more expensive, and it is impractical for very large sessions. It shines for young patients with early hairline recession, or anyone prioritizing a dense frontal hairline over total graft count.

So which one should you choose?

For most patients, the surgeon's experience matters far more than the technique label. A great FUE result beats an average DHI result every time. Ask to see unedited before/after photos of cases similar to yours for the technique you're considering.

Collect quotes that clearly state the recommended technique and the reasoning behind it. With HairCraft's anonymous clinic quotes you can compare recommendations across verified clinics — if three clinics propose wildly different techniques for the same photos, treat that as a red flag.
